We have recently started an optional genetics study. If you have not already been asked to participate, your participation will be requested during your next telephone interview.
|
| |
|
The purpose of the genetics study is to create a bank of genetic (DNA) samples of military personnel and then to look for genes which may be involved in resilience and/or risk for problems associated with deployment and combat-related stress, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological disorders.

If you are willing to consider participating:
- We would mail you a
small kit which will allow you to provide a saliva (spit) sample for DNA
analysis by the lab at the Ann Arbor VA, as well as a short pencil and paper questionnaire.
- All samples are
stored and identified with a code number and all other identifying information
is removed to keep the results confidential.
- Abt SRBI will keep a
separate file that links the saliva sample code number to your identity; no
other organization will have access to this information and Abt SRBI will not
know the lab results.
- You can withdraw your
sample at any time by simply contacting us.
- You will not receive
any results of the analysis of the DNA sample.
- Your DNA sample will not be used in other studies without your
permission.

If you are willing, we will send you a kit through the mail that explains this portion of the study in more detail. In the kit, there will be a genetics consent form which you will need to read carefully to determine if you would like to participate. After reading the genetics consent form, if you have any questions concerning the study you can call us here at Abt SRBI.
|
| |
|
If you decide to participate, we will ask that you sign the consent form and mail it and the completed questionnaire back to us here at Abt SRBI. The saliva sample will be sent to the Ann Arbor VA. Instructions for giving your official consent, completing the questionnaire, giving your saliva sample, and shipping materials will all be included in the kit.

If you choose to participate, you will be compensated $25 for your time.
