Beyond Diagnosis: A Landmark Survey of Patients,
Partners and Health Professionals on Depression and Treatment
One of the largest and most comprehensive national surveys of patients,
partners and health professionals concerning depression and its treatment
was conducted between May and July 2000. The survey explored the nature
and severity of symptoms before treatment, the impact of depression on
relationships and quality of life, effect of treatment on depression and
quality of life, patient-provider communications and decision-making related
to treatment of depression and attitudes and beliefs about the management
and treatment of depression. Interviews were completed with a national
sample of 1,001 persons currently being treated for major depression,
408 spouses or partners of these persons with depression, a national sample
of 881 primary care doctors in direct patient care on an outpatient basis
and a national sample of 716 therapists/counselors who treat patients
with major depression on an outpatient basis.
The survey was conducted by the national public opinion research organization,
Schulman, Ronca & Bucuvalas, Inc. (SRBI). The survey was conducted
