February 23, 2010 Timothy Michalowski, GIS Expert, to Lead New Abt SRBI GIS Department Timothy Michalowski, a GIS expert and planner, has joined Abt SRBI to lead a new GIS department starting March 1, 2010. Timothy joins Abt SRBI from the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), where he was responsible for GIS technology for the entire agency. Before joining NYC DOT, he served in several government agencies. He was GIS Associate Planner at the Puget Sound Regional Council, where he was also project manager for a spatial geodatabase of all building permits in that region. At the City of Chicago Zoning Reform Commission, he edited the city's official ArcGIS zoning map, and researched land use zoning regulations for the Commission, comprised of Chicago planning staff and elected officials. At the Great Cities Urban Data visualization Lab (GCUDV) he implemented an ArcIMS GIS web-based system. He has extensive experience maintaining and editing GIS relational databases, SQL Servers, ArcGIS Server, ArcSDE, and ARCGIS Desktop 9.3.2 products and extensions. GIS is a rapidly growing field and Abt SRBI has been growing its GIS capabilities beyond its Transportation Group. In addition, Abt Associates is utilizing GIS in health care, urban planning, emergency preparedness and numerous other areas. For example, GIS could allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times (i.e. logistics) in the event of a natural or man-made disaster and GIS is used in health care to identify under-served markets. "The GIS Department will be a central resource for the entire company," said Mark Schulman, President of Abt SRBI. "Timothy will be meeting with key people throughout Abt SRBI and Abt to review our capabilities and discuss potential applications. Under Timothy's leadership, our goal is to consolidate all Abt SRBI GIS work within our GIS Department and help us attain a leadership position in this area." Examples of Timothy's GIS work can be found on his website, www.larkgrove.com. Timothy received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Suffolk University and a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from the University of Illinois at Chicago. At Illinois, he specialized in GIS. Timothy will work in Abt SRBI's New York office for two months starting March 1st, then move to the Chicago office May 3rd. | |||||||||||||||||||||
