Survivors of Traumatic Events
Hugo Pilot Survey: Abt SRBI conducted surveys of randomly selected
South Carolina households, screening for exposure to the disaster and
the presence of adolescents during the Hurricaine. Parents gave their
reactions to the disaster and their recall of the childrens' reactions;
as well, adolescents provided their own reactions. Both perspectives were
collected to determine whether or not parent and adolescent interviews
in the same household are feasible in assessment of the impact of disaster.
A Client and Community Survey of Hurricane Hugo: Conducted
for the American Red Cross, Abt SRBI interviewed 479 Red Cross Disaster Services
clients and a community sample of non-clients. The response rate was 80%.
Disasters' Impact Upon Adults and Adolescents: Abt SRBI surveyed 5,600
adults, parents and adolescents in Charleston, SC, and San Francisco,
CA, for the Medical University of South Carolina, the University of South
Carolina and the University of California at San Francisco, under a grant
from the National Institute of Mental Health. This study focused on the
longer term psychological outcomes of traumatic events, including post-traumatic
stress disorder, depression, anxiety and substance abuse.
